Is this the best job of all time?

Senior/Principal Research Fellow – Data Analytics
Sheffield Hallam University – Academy of Sport and Physical Activity
Faculty of Health and Wellbeing
Permanent
Full time
£35,938 to £54,283 (pro rata) per annum, dependent on experience

The Academy of Sport & Physical Activity consists of academic programme delivery and three research centres: The Centre for Sports Engineering Research, the Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences and the Sport Industry Research Centre. We have an excellent reputation for the quality of our research and were rated 4th in terms of research power in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

To complement our work as a UK Sport Innovation Partner, and to enhance our work in exercise health related research and the economics of sport, we are looking for an experienced researcher in data analytics. You should be experienced in the analysis of complex sets of data using advanced techniques, and will have experience in all or some of the following:

  • The analysis of small, medium and large data sets;
  • Statistical analysis;
  • Machine learning techniques;
  • Decision trees;
  • Neural networks.

Some knowledge of database design and programming would also be an advantage.

Typical data sets will include large databases containing information on Olympic performance, sport and exercise, sports economy, biomechanical analyses and public health. So, whilst a passion for sport would be an advantage, it is not essential.

It is expected that you will be able to lead the expanding area of data analytics and would be returned in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) with world-class publications for submission in October 2013. In particular, you would be expected to co-supervise three UK Sport/EPSRC CASE studentships on the data mining and use of key performance metrics in Olympic sport which commenced in October 2012.

The post will be based at Collegiate Hall in Sheffield’s leafy Ecclesall district.
